Fifteen students from Mrs. Reed's HS Zoology class recently had the opportunity to step into the shoes of professional zookeepers during a special spring field trip to the Sedgwick County Zoo.
As part of a volunteer experience, students worked directly with zoo staff to assist with animal care tasks, gaining valuable, real-world exposure to careers in animal care.
Their tasks included cleaning the ponds in the Australia/South America bird exhibits and watching a black swan wellness check that involved weighing, assessing health, and wing clipping before the birds were moved to a new enclosure. Some students also helped mammal keepers clean enclosures and prepare animal meals.
After their volunteer work, students explored the zoo exhibits, including an exciting visit to see the zoo’s new baby elephant.
Perhaps the most touching moment came at the end of the day when the group’s bus driver shared that a visitor had approached to compliment the exceptional behavior and work ethic of the Rose Hill students compared to other high school groups present that day.
Mrs. Reed, the RHHS Zoology and Anatomy & Physiology teacher who led the trip, said, “I am beyond proud of our students here at Rose Hill, and I am so glad that others can see how great our students are. They were responsible, respectful, and set a great example for other students across the state.”
This hands-on learning experience not only enriched students’ understanding of animal sciences but also showcased the character and pride of our Rocket community.
