Why Invest in Community Schools?

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." -Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin

There is strong evidence showing that when community members invest in schools, students’ education improves and the overall community benefits.

  1. Improved Academic Performance: Research shows that investing in school infrastructure, such as modernizing buildings, providing new technology, and enhancing learning environments, leads to better academic outcomes. For example, the U.S. Department of Education found that students in well-maintained schools score higher on tests than those in deteriorating buildings.

  2. Enhanced Safety and Well-being: Investments in school security and safety, such as secure entrances, storm shelters, and updated facilities, contribute to a more secure learning environment, allowing students to focus on learning without distractions or concerns for their safety. Safe environments are linked to better student behavior, lower absenteeism, and higher engagement in school.

  3. Long-term Economic Growth: Communities that invest in their schools often see a return on investment through long-term economic growth. Education helps develop a skilled workforce, attracting businesses and boosting the local economy. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that increased funding for schools, especially in low-income areas, leads to higher graduation rates and greater future earnings for students.

  4. Community Engagement and Property Values: Communities that prioritize their schools often see an increase in civic engagement and stronger community bonds. Additionally, high-quality schools have been shown to raise property values, as families want to live in districts with strong educational opportunities. A study by the National Association of Realtors found that school quality is one of the top factors influencing home-buying decisions, which in turn can enhance the overall prosperity of the community.

  5. Support for At-Risk Students: Investments in school programs and facilities, especially those aimed at supporting students from low-income families or special needs students, can help close achievement gaps. Schools with more resources are better equipped to offer tutoring, after-school programs, and other supports that help all students succeed.

In short, there is significant proof that when communities invest in their schools and children, the students not only thrive academically but the community as a whole becomes more vibrant, safe, and prosperous.

Let's Talk Taxes...

Use our calculator below to find out how much you currently pay in annual taxes now. If the bond issue is approved by voters on November 5, it is projected that the bond and interest mill levy will not exceed 17 mills over the 16-year life of the bond issue and all currently outstanding bond issues. Enter the Market Value of your Home in the first box and then a worst case scenario increase in property valuation in the second box.
It is expected that if the District's assessed valuation growth exceeds 1.5%, the mill levy may further reduce. To put this into better perspective, from 2013-2021, the average annual increase was 4.25% and from 2013-2021, the average increase was 6.09%.
From 2020-2024, the town of Rose Hill grew 3.44% alone.
Individual property tax adjustments will be based on changes in the market value of the property and the fluctuations in the mill levy.

The current tax payer pays $195 per $100,000.00 of property to the school bond fund and that will not increase. Our current levy for the bond fund is 17 mills and it will not be exceeded and most likely will be less over time. Current debt is scheduled to paid off in 2030. This will extend it to 2040. The only way one’s taxes will go up is if their personal property valuation goes up. Worst case scenario is that if your valuation increases a lot, the most your taxes for the bond fund will increase is 1.5% which is $3 per $100,000.00 each year. So if you have a $250,000.00 home you are currently paying roughly $500 a year to the bond fund, if your valuation goes up, you would pay $507.50 instead. If your valuation stays the same, you will continue to pay $500.

Worst Case Scenario That You Will Pay over the life of bond

Enter the amount that you think your property value will increase to within 15 years.
This will tell you how much taxes would increase annually.
HOWEVER, please note, the levy is projected to be LESS, not more.
