Please join us as we say "thank you" to our local school board members; President Kirk Hayden, Vice President John Purvis, Nik Ford, Patricia Madden-Beran, Bob Westwood, Kylene Roberts and Alyson Taylor-Smith. These board members spend countless hours participating in meetings, reading reports and research so they can make decisions needed to keep our schools successful. They also attend specialized professional development workshops and conferences to stay on top of students’ educational needs, education issues, and trends.
Statewide there are 1,198 school board members serving Kansas' 286 public school districts; all boards have seven board members with the exception of one district (Fort Riley), which has three publicly elected board members.
School board elections are held every two years, on a 4-3 rotation to ensure continuity.
These leaders of success for our district and community serve as volunteers, without pay!
In our community, our Board of Education makes decisions that impact the future of all our children. Their job is to establish a vision for our schools, then provide guidance and direction in accomplishing that vision. They ensure that our schools are accountable to the community.
"I am grateful that these board members are willing to sacrifice their time, talent, and knowledge for our community and our schools. Sometimes their job is very challenging and they don't often hear the words of encouragement and appreciation. I ask everyone to take time to thank our board members for serving on our school board," said Superintendent Randal Chickadonz.
"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." - B.B. King
Be sure to thank a school board member today. #thankBOE
