The Accelerated Reader Program is designed to motivate students to read more often and increase their comprehension skills. Before the students participate in the program, they are administered the STAR reading test which determines their instructional and independent reading levels. Books in the library and classrooms are categorized by reading levels, and students select those that are designated to be in their appropriate reading zone.
After reading a book, children are encouraged to take a computerized Accelerated Reader test on their selection. If they pass the test, they receive points for their efforts. These points allow them to move on to more difficult books. This really increases student confidence, their love for reading, and their classroom achievement.
