Starting with the graduation class of 2001, two years of the same foreign language are required for Qualified Admissions to KS Regent Universities and for State Scholar candidates.

Spanish I
Prerequisite: None
1 Credit

Spanish I is designed to introduce the student to the Spanish language and culture through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. In addition to the textbook and video series, sample activities include conversations, role-playing, songs, games, videos, cultural projects, and creative story writing.

Spanish II
Prerequisite: Passing grade in Spanish I
1 Credit

Spanish II continues to develop the student's Spanish language skills and cultural understanding through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. In addition to the textbook and video series, class participation includes role-playing, conversations, songs, games, videos, creative story writing and cultural projects.

Spanish III
Prerequisite: Passing grade in Spanish II

Spanish III involves a more in-depth study of the Spanish language and culture. Skills are developed through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. Students will participate in role-playing, conversations, songs, games, videos, creative story writing, and cultural projects, along with the textbook and video series

Spanish IV
Prerequisite: Passing grade in Spanish III
1 Unit of Credit

Spanish IV is designed to increase and enhance the students acquired knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. Activities such as role-playing, conversations, songs, games, videos, creative story writing, and cultural projects provide an in-depth review of concepts previously learned. New themes are introduced through the textbook and video series.

French I
Prerequisite: None .
1 Unit of Credit

By the end of French I, students should be able to speak, write, and read short stories, dialogues, and cultural realia in present and simple future tense pertaining to daily life. Verb conjugation and noun gender will be studied in high-interest topical units: food, clothing,the home, family and friends, and activities at school or in town. Oral presentations, written work, and verbal and physical participation in class are typical activities used to aid in comprehension and retention. Cultural aspects will focus on French in Europe and Canada. Class discussion will gradually increase to about 50% French.

French II
Prerequisite: Passing grade in French I
1 Unit of Credit

During the second year of French, the students will study past and conditional tenses while acquiring an expanded vocabulary and an understanding of many details of French grammar. Our study will include sections of French poetry and short stories as well as a look at the Caribbean and African French-speaking cultures. Students will be able to research and write short essays in French on topics such as a French chateaux or famous locales, a journal of a typical day, a recipe of ethnic origin and a description of an animal and its habitat. By the end of the year, most classroom discussion should be in French.
