Introduction to Family and Consumer Science is a comprehensive foundation course designed to assist students in developing the core knowledge and skills needed to manage their lives by exploring the impact of today's choices on tomorrow's possibilities. Emphasis is on leadership, human development, family and parenting education, consumer economics and resource management housing and living environments, nutrition and foods, textiles and apparel and career preparation.

Critical skills in decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, technology, work and family management and workplace readiness are reinforced through authentic experiences.

Meal Management (Spring Only)

This course is an introduction to the study of foods and nutrition. It will feature information about using the Food Guide Pyramid, the kitchen and its equipment, food preparation skills, food preparation, and meal planning and preparation. The student will learn to prepare a variety of foods including quick breads, eggs, and breakfast meats, milk and cheese products, soups, salads, pasta, casseroles, fruits, simple desserts and cookies. Each kitchen group within the class will have the opportunity to plan and prepare a breakfast and lunch. This class is a good class to learn the basics of food preparation---and yes---you get to eat the food!

Advanced Meal Management (Spring Only)
Prerequisite: Foods I
Grade: 10 - 12

Foods II is an intermediate level study of foods and nutrition. The student will have the opportunity to prepare more advanced foods including meats, vegetables, yeast breads, pies, cakes and other desserts. Information about consumer spending in the supermarket and meal planning and preparation will also be studied. Each kitchen group will plan and prepare a dinner at the end of each unit. This course provides an excellent opportunity to learn preparation techniques for more advanced types of foods.

Nutrition and Wellness

For the student who wants to look and feel their best, Nutrition and Wellness is a course that should be taken. The emphasis of this course is to help the student develop healthy eating and exercise habits. Topics taught include nutrition and how it relates to wellness and disease, tips for healthy eating and eating disorders. Each student will investigate personal recommended weight, learn to control and maintain weight, assess personal fitness, develop and practice an exercise routine to promote fitness and develop ways to manage stress. Exercise sessions will be included as part of this class.

Textiles and Apparel

Textiles and Apparel is an introduction to the study of clothing selection and construction. Students will be exposed to a brief study of personal color analysis, clothing selection, wardrobe planning and clothing care. Fabric characteristics, construction and selection will be studied as well. Correct use of a sewing machine and serger will be used to learn basic clothing construction techniques while doing a variety of projects chosen by the student. Students will be required to supply their own sewing equipment, patterns and fabric for projects.

The student who enjoys sewing, and wishes to learn more advanced techniques of clothing construction, should take this course. Students will be able to construct a variety of more advanced projects with the instructor's permission. The student must supply his/her own sewing equipment, patterns, and fabric for projects.

This class covers aspects of becoming a parent and learning about the child from the prenatal period of development through age one. Areas of study include managing work and family, parenting concepts, prenatal development, labor and delivery physical, social, emotional and intellectual development and care of an infant. Students will also be exposed to available careers in the field of child development.

Early Childhood Development "The Preschool Child" (Fall Only)
Prerequisite: none
Grade: 10-12
Credit: .5

The Preschool Child will study the development of children from ages one to six. Areas covered include physical, social, emotional and intellectual development as well as current topics related to the preschool. Students will also be exposed to available careers in the field of child development. Experience will be gained by working with children in a preschool lab that will be held one day a week. Students who enjoy working with children or who are in a child care position should take this course.

Career and Life Planning

Grade: 11 - 12

Career and Life Planning is designed to teach skills for when one is living alone. Areas studied include decision-making processes, finding a job, banking, using credit, planning and following a budget, selecting a place to live, buying a car, insurance, housekeeping and clothing care.

Real life experiences will be use to simulate projects. Anyone planning to be responsible for themselves should take this course.

Balancing Career and Family

The effects of personal life choices, determined by normal and unexpected life changes, impact the well-being of family, career and society life. To study and practice what is involved in making these choices enables students to make healthier choices that impact the family, the workforce and the community.

Housing and Interior Design
Prerequisite: none
Grades: 10-12

Creating a living environment using the concepts of interior design is the objective of this one semester course.  Students will focus on the elements and principles of design to plan and decorate the interior of a home. Housing decisions by individuals and families are explored as they affect needs, environment, technological developments and governmental influences. Student projects will be evaluated for interior and exterior design, construction quality, energy efficiency and security and safety.  This course will also help students explore career skills and job opportunities in housing and interior design.
