Intro to Business

This course is designed to offer basic background knowledge and to provide an interest base in the business field.  Course highlights in the following business areas include: decision making, budgeting, checking accounts, the use of credit, the market system, careers and consumer buying decisions. Students in this class will be evaluated on daily work, quizzes, tests and special projects.

Keyboarding
Prerequisite: none
Grade 9 - 12

This entry-level class is designed for the student interested in developing keyboarding skills for personal application.  The student will learn proper techniques needed to be efficient and accurate at keyboarding.  The course will develop basic keyboarding and computer skills for personal use at an acceptable performance level.  Proper form for letters, reports and memorandums will also be taught. Students will be evaluated on technique, timed writings, daily assignments, reports, quizzes and tests.

Word Processing
Prerequisite:  Keyboarding
Grade 9 - 12

Word Processing will further develop keyboarding skills for both personal and occupational application.  The student will review proper keyboarding techniques taught in the Keyboarding class and will learn to operate the 10-key pad.  Also, the student will be able to display competence in arranging, centering, and typing tabulated material.  A business simulation to enhance document processing and formatting skills will be completed. The course will develop basic keyboarding and computer skills at an acceptable performance level.  Throughout the semester emphasis will be placed on job  production skills.  The student will be evaluated on technique, timed writings, production work, letters, reports, tables, quizzes and tests.

Desktop Publishing
Prerequisite:  Keyboarding
Grade 9 - 12

Desktop Publishing will provide further opportunity for students to establish above average computer skills in business related areas.  Emphasis will be placed on the preparation of flyers, newsletters, layouts and spreads, brochures and business documents. Adobe In Design  will be used to develop desktop publishing documents on the computer.  Evaluations for this class will be based on daily assignments, tests, simulations and desktop publishing projects.

Computer Applications
Prerequisite: Keyboarding
Grade 10 - 12

This class is for the student interested in the development of computer skills and further application of keyboarding skills.  The student will learn to use computer software to process information in proper business format.  Emphasis will be placed on developing employable skills in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.  Student evaluation will be based on daily computer assignments and projects, quizzes and tests.

Advanced Computer Applications
Prerequisite: Computer Applications
Grade 10 - 12

This course will provide the opportunity to expand and further develop skills learned in Computer Applications.  Advanced word processing, database and spreadsheet applications, as well as their integration, will be used to develop employable computer skills.  Students will also become proficient in the use of presentation software, including; iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and Powerpoint. Students will also learn how to create a website using html. Obtaining "online" information from the Internet will be covered.  A scanner and digital camera will be used to incorporate graphics into projects.  The student will be evaluated on daily computer assignments and projects.

Web Page Design
Prerequisite: Advanced Computer Applications
Grade 11-12

Web Page Design is a one-semester course designed to introduce students to the creation of web pages by using both HTML and the web-editing software Adobe  Dreamweaver.  Students will be exposed to common web page formats and functions. Students will also learn to create animations for websites using Adobe Flash.  The course will encourage curiosity and independent exploration of World Wide Web resources.  Web Page Design will develop an exercise-oriented approach that allows students to learn by example.  Students will design web pages as projects and also help design and update the school web site. The student will be evaluated on daily computer assignments and projects.

In-House Training (IHT)
Prerequisite:  Word Processing, Computer Applications and one additional business class.  (Teacher permission required)                 
Grade 12

In-House Training is designed as a training ground for the student to apply all business skills previously learned.  This class will simulate a business environment where students will work for teachers, staff and community in an employer/employee relationship.  The course will be run like a business.  "Live" production work from outside sources will fulfill the content of the course.  Students must be able to work together on projects in a professional and business like manner.  Students will be evaluated based on the successful completion of "live" business work, being sure to meet acceptable standards and deadlines.

Accounting I
Prerequisite: None
Grades 10 - 12

Do your debits equal your credits?  Did your balance sheet balance?  This course is a "must" for any student interested in a Business major, having his/her own business or just being able to keep track of one's own finances.    Accounting I covers basic accounting procedures and provides the student the opportunity to apply these principles in related applications.  Accounting methods used in business and industry, including payroll, special journals, sales tax and end-of-the-fiscal-period financial statements will be studied.  This class is a must for students planning to major in a business related field in college. Grades will be based on daily work, simulation sets and tests.

Computerized Accounting II
Prerequisite:  Accounting I and Teacher Recommendation
Grades 11 - 12
1 credit

Computerized Accounting II  is designed to increase the student's proficiency in his/her knowledge of partnership accounting, departmental accounting, depreciation, notes, accrued items and accounting for a merchandising business that has been organized as a corporation.  The use of automated accounting software programs will be used to aide the student in his/her accounting work. Grades will be based on daily work, simulation sets and tests.

Business and Personal Law
Prerequisite:  None
Grade 11 - 12
.5 credit

This class will provide a basic knowledge of business and personal law for the student who is interested in majoring in business or for practical use in his/her personal life.  This course covers the fundamental knowledge of constitutional rights, criminal laws, offer and acceptance, contracts, property, bailments, renting realty and wills.  Guest speakers covering different areas of law will be utilized.  Field trips to Sedgwick County Juvenile Court, Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility, Butler County Correctional Facility and/or Rose Hill Municipal Court may be taken.  Student evaluation for this course will be based on daily work, projects, quizzes and tests.
