Sparr Takes 1st At RH Invitational
The Rose Hill High School held their annual invitational tournament consisting of 22 very talented teams. Among the schools was the Derby Panthers, a 6A powerhouse, along with the 4A favored Andale Indians. Hutchinson, Valley Center, Andover Central, McPherson and Ark City represented the top in 5A. Hosting one of the best tournaments in the state, the Rockets felt the pressure to perform well. Sparr, who took 2nd in the tournament last year, flew right through the first four rounds. After his opening round bye, Sparr would go on to beat Caleb White from Mulvane by fall in 3:02, advancing him to the quarterfinals where he pinned Jacob Nelson from Winfield in 1:05. The semi-finals showed more of Sparr's dominance as he pinned Jonathan Peterson in just over 5 minutes. Heading to the finals, Sparr would not be satisfied with 2nd place. His opponent, Colby Watters from Ark City, came into the tournament with a 9-6 record but was last year's Class 5A 103 lb State Runner-up. Watters defeated 2nd seeded Tim Wrestler from Chanute in the semi-finals. With a back and forth match, Sparr gained the upper-hand and would go on to be named the 119 lb. tournament champion winning by decision 5-2. With that win, Zac Sparr now holds the Rose Hill High School Career Wins Record with 121 wins as he passed Jeremy Terrell who set the record in 2004 with 120 wins. The Rockets, along with Sparr, would gather team points as Tyler Long split with a 2-2 record along with Eastin Dockers in the 171 weight class. Earning 44 team points, the Rockets finished in 18th place. Derby would take the gold as they finished with 158 total points, followed by Valley Center with 143. The Rockets will now prepare for their home dual against Andale this upcoming Thursday. |
