Sparr Finishes 2nd in 4A State
The Rockets took four wrestlers to compete in the 4A state tournament Friday and Saturday in the Bicentennial Center. The day started out when 119 pound sophmore Zac Sparr pinned his man in 3:28 advancing him to the next round. The next contender was 145 pound Senior Ryan Anderson who won by a major decision 10-2. Brenton Daniel lost his opening match by a decision 5-9. Kyle Smith pinned his first round contestant in 3:09. The Rockets, winning 3 of their 4 opening matches, looked to be in good shape starting off well in the State tournament. In the next round Sparr would win in a 7-0 decision along with Brenton Daniel who bounced back from the early loss and won by a fall in 2:02. Both Kyle Smith and Ryan Anderson lost their next match. The semi-finals was crucial for Sparr, who was competing against Sharky Slyter who beat him last year in State. Sparr started off slow, trailing the entire match, but bounced back and scored in the final seconds to move him into the championship, winning the semi-finals in a 8-7 decision. The tournament ended early for Seniors Ryan Anderson and Kyle Smith who after winning their first match, lost the next two. Brenton Daniel, after the first round loss, caught a winning streak looking to get him back into the top placers by winning his next three matches. Daniel would then end up losing his next two, finshing 6th in 152 pound class 4A state. After the close semi-final win, Sparr matched up against Ryne Cokeley. Sparr fought and battled for first, but in the end Cokeley would get the better end. The Rockets as a team finished in the upper half taking 16th with 35 points. |
